Advice on Starting your Own
Family Memoir
Looking
into your family history is more than a hobby. It is an exploration
of who we are and where we came from. It is a
real life adventure, an opportunity to explore and discover facts
about the lives of our relatives and ancestors.
There is much to learn, not just about your own past,
but about how best to use your time in the search for information and
the collection of data. You are doing more than creating the skeleton
of a family tree, you are putting flesh on it, in the form of past
events, stories and emotions.
-
First of all you need to decide where you want to
start. You need to talk to as many elderly relatives as possible.
-
You should collect family documents such as diaries,
photos and letters.
-
Once you have decided how to approach the task, you
will need to create a set of questions that will guide your
interviews and fact finding.
The more you find out, the more new questions will come to mind.
-
To develop this work you will need to develop skills
in researching, recording data, interviewing, using the information
found and writing.
-
Particularly important are interviewing skills as
these determine the quality of the information you gather.
-
The use of a tape recorder is invaluable, but you must
ensure that the quality is good with no background noise. Tapes
should be copied in case of loss or damage.
-
A well structured interview is a great asset when you
begin the task of analysing the data you have. If any information you
have is not located in time and place then it can be very difficult
to utilise at a later stage.
As part of the service
offered, there are a series of short booklets which will shortly be
available that will help you at each stage.
These Booklets are designed with additional Work
Sheets to ensure that your time is spent productively and that you
avoid all the usual pitfalls. They guide you through each stage with
simple to follow advice and give examples of how you can proceed.
