In a League of Their Own -
The story of the Women's League of Health and Beauty.

The League has a rich legacy, with manyIn a League of Their Own
The story of the Women's League of Health and Beauty individual stories combining to form a fascinating history. No-one was more remarkable than the founder, Mary Bagot Stack. As a young widow, in poor health and with a child to raise, she created an organisation that was important to many people and has made a significant contribution to the well being of our society.

Within the first twelve months of its life the League had become international, establishing branches in Ireland and Canada. Seventy five years later it continues to thrive in the UK and many other countries across the world.

Writing this book was a revelation. My interest in the role of women, organisational change and oral history were each drawn into developing a deeper understanding of what the league meant to people. The account had to be true to the data I had collected and what I wrote had to reflect the true nature of the organisation. Problems, issues and past difficulties were discussed with honesty and it soon became clear how these had not been allowed to dominate, but had been used to learn more and allow the work to grow and prosper.

From the many people I interviewed there are anecdotes and memories which bring to life the story of the League. For myself, this has been one of the most pleasurable projects to research and write. I have seldom interviewed so many people where the consensus on the wide range of benefits was so strong; between members and teachers, between young and old, and between those with a very short membership to those who have been members most of their lives.

Mary Bagot Stack's ideals of friendship and loyalty are alive and well and they have ensured the League's survival.
